Scottish Water and SSE partner to pioneer low carbon heat networks

Scottish Water Horizons has partnered with SSE Energy Solutions to pioneer green heating technology.

A low-carbon heat network will be developed in part of Inverness, using thermal energy from wastewater that would otherwise be wasted. A Scottish Water pumping station will provide a sustainable heat source for several key buildings including local SSE and Scottish Water offices and facilities, and other private and public sector buildings in the area. Operations are expected to begin in 2028.

The Inverness project is part of a wider strategic partnership between SSE Energy Solutions and Scottish Water Horizons to develop low-carbon district heat networks across Scotland. Decarbonising heat, which currently accounts for 37% of the UK’s carbon emissions, is a crucial component in meeting the country's ambitious net zero targets.

It is also hoped that the development will create local opportunities for supply chains and skills development in the heat networks sector, supporting high-value jobs in the green economy.

Horizons is a standalone Scottish Water business.
