The Government has announced a commitment to reintroducing beavers into the wild.

Natural England can now issue licences to projects to reintroduce beavers into the wild, where these projects demonstrate clear benefits and where risks can be avoided, mitigated or managed.

Among the many benefits beaver populations bring are river and wetland restoration, and reduced flooding and drought.

The policy pack sets out information on licensing the wild release of beavers, managing the existing wild beaver populations, and developing a long-term management plan for beavers in England.

National Trust’s Purbeck Beaver Project in Dorset is the first to receive a licence.
